Let me start by telling you my name is Cherri Lynn Stocking Timmer,
I have been searching my family history on the Stocking side for quite
some time now. I have had my fathers side of the Genealogy for awhile
now. My fathers line stems from the Jared (as listed at this site
as Jerrod) I have done a lot of research on this family, I have many
interesting stories I have obtained on them and I am also
in the progress of putting together a story on this family in
the Antrim Historical Society in Antrim Michigan. In
Elk Rapids, Michigan this family was among some of the first settlers in
this region. The Name of Jared Stocking had been misspelled even
in the Stocking Ancestry. I have follow his whereabouts in various
places in Michigan. In most places where he resided, he
is referred to mainly as Jared Stocking. Now as to the Son of Jared
Stocking and Lucy Bigelow, Listed as Perry his correct name is Oliver Perry
and went by his middle name, I have numerous historical stories on
my Great Grandfather, Oliver Perry Stocking was married to Laura
Ann Kimball in Elk Rapids Michigan on 4 August 1857 Meguzee (Elk Rapids)
Michigan. They had a son by the name of Richard Clark Stocking married
Margerie May Rank whom are my Grandparents, They married on 29 May
1926 Elk Rapids, Michigan. They had a son whom is my father Richard
Clark Stocking Jr. whom married my Mother Connie Lou Cole in 1958 Lansing,
Ingham County, Michigan. There was three children born from this
union;
Cherri Lynn Stocking born 28 Mar 1959 Lansing, Michigan
Richard Clark Stocking III 31 May 1960 Lansing, Michigan
Kimberly Ann Stocking 12 Dec 1961
Lansing, Michigan
Now let me explain the reason I am writing you not only to give
you correct information regarding Lucy Bigelow and Jared Stocking's family
and my connection to the Bigelow line from my fathers side. I have
presently learned searching my Mothers side of the family I have a Second
Bigelow connection, and I thought this to be very interesting to the Bigelow
Society. So let me begin with my Lucy side first because this is
where my second line connects to my mothers side. My Mother and Father
were not aware of this family connection when they married and my father
is no longer living and my Mother was in shock when I told her what I have
learned searching her side of the family history. But I have found
this both amusing and most interesting.

lived in Colchester a few years, then moved to Great Barrington. He died,
leaving 8 children, and Sarah married (2) 28 Apr 1774 Ichabod Hopkins,
son of Timothy and Jemima (Scovill) Hopkins. He was born 7 Dec 1744 probably
at Waterbury, CT, and died 20 Oct 1819 at Great Barrington. After his death,
Sarah acted as a midwife for many years and assisted at the birth of more
than 150 infants, usually travelling on horseback, and many times having
to ford the Housatonic River. In her late years she moved to the vicinity
of Buffalo, and died 10 Aug 1831 at Amherst, Erie county, NY.
Her first three children were born at Colchester, the rest at

Clair probably died some time between 1895, when Glenwood was born in
Los
Angeles, and 1899, as his wife appears in Oregon in the 1900 census
as Mrs.
Strong, married 2 years, with an infant daughter, Gladys L. Strong
in
addition to Glenwood. By the time the property in Eugene was
being sold,
she was married to Thomas A. Evans. No idea what became of Mr.
Strong.
Mr. and Mrs. Evans along with Glenwood Bigalow and Gladys Strong (who
appears to have taken the name Evans) moved north to Alberta in about
1914.
Prior to that, they spent some time in Mold, Douglas Co., Washington,
where
they were residing in 1905 when the estate of Amanda's mother was probated.
Glenwood's birth registration indicates that both Clair and Amanda were
originally from Iowa, so it is likely that D.C. and Hattie also have
a
connection to that state. I have found a listing of a marriage
between a
Hattie Finch and Doctor [don't know if that's a professional title
or an odd
given name] Bigalow in Worth County Iowa in 1965. If these are
the same
people as the pair in Los Angeles in 1906, they would be the right
age to be
Clair's parents. "The History of Mitchell and Worth Counties",
quoted at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~iaworth/worthist.htm#agriculture lists a D.C.
Bigalow as present at a meeting in January 1879 to discuss the formation
of
an agricultural society in Worth County.
Clair/Clare F. Bigalow, my great-grandfather, has been my Bigelow brick
wall
until I discovered D.C. and Hattie. Any information that anyone
has about
any of the individuals mentioned above would be greatly appreciated.

More 09/09/2002:
Since I sent my message I have picked up a couple of additional leads
via
Ancestry.com. Their census indexes (I haven't broken down and
subscribed to
the image service yet) list a D.C. Bigalow in the 1870 census of Worth
County Iowa, Northwood Township. The index entry includes the
notation "-M
26 NY-" which I interpret to mean Male, aged 26, born in New York state.
In
the index for the 1860 census, I have Doctor C. Bigelow in the same
county
and township. I am also more inclined now to believe that "Doctor"
was a
given name rather than a professional designation, because I have located
"Doctor Bigalow" in he civil war service records. I doubt that
a physician
would have been enlisted as a private and ended the war as only a corporal,
but things may have been different in those days -- it seems that here
at
least, professionals enter the armed services as officers.
Lots of avenues to pursue, if only one had time. I do intend to
re-join the
society one of these days. I had a membership for a couple of
years in the
70s, but wasn't serious enough at that time to get any value from it.

George Hoyt Bigelow (1891-1935) Harvard A.B., M.D. and
Dr.
P.H. Bigelow, both faculty at Antioch College in 1922-1923 with my
grandfather,
Ralph Edwin Boothby, also of Harvard. Finally I am seeking information
about Mrs. Janie Rice Bigelow who is listed as a member of the Progressive
Education Association for the year 1920-1921. I am particularly interested
in connecting these people to the Bigelows of Weston Vermont where I grew
up.

1) 15336.5 Cornelius
6 BIGELOW married, circa 1792, Persis Harris,
born between 1774 and 1776, daughter of Gerald and Elizabeth (Sawyer)
Harris. They are supposed to have moved to Montreal circa 1800, though
a
fourth son was said to be born at Townsend, VT
in 1801. Howe's Bigelow genealogy says he went with his brothers to
form
Montreal's first nail factory. By 1803 be is listed as
a tenant on the lands of Col. Daniel Robertson in Chatham township,
Argenteuil county. Still further rumor is that he returned to
New York briefly, but in 1807 was definitely back in Quebec. Howe's
Bigelow
genealogy says he lived in Montreal during the
War of 1812, but children born after 1814 were all born at Chatham
(now
called St. Philippe), Quebec.
Cornelius' wife Persis died 20 May 1823, following
the birth of her
fourteenth child.
I would greatly appreciate knowing how Persis was determined to be a
Harris
and how it was determined that her parents were Gerald Harris m Elizabeth
Sawyer. The Cornelius Bigelow home in Chatham, Quebec was very
near that of
my 4th ggrandfather, Silas Harris, and according to a published genealogy
(authored by Lee & Mae Corless) that addresses the Harris family,
Persis was
Silas' sister. Unfortunately, I can find absolutely no documentation
for
this whatsoever and mathematically, this would appear to be highly
unlikely
unless perhaps, Persis were the product of a second marriage to a much
younger wife.. This same genealogy claims that Elizabeth Sawyer
was the
wife of Silas Harris and I have found some evidence to indicate that
this is
correct. Nevertheless, if Persis was indeed, a Harris, determining
her
relationship to my 4th ggrandfather could be crucial to proving my
Harris
line. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
2) 16211. Mary
5 BIGELOW, daughter of Jonathan 4 (Jonathan 3, Joshua 2,
John 1), and Mary (SNOW)
BIGELOW, was born 16 July 1731 at Lancaster, MA. She was married at
Harvard,
MA on 5 Feb 1751 to Nathan Brooks,
son of Joseph and Susannah (Bacon) Brooks. He was born 1 May 1713 at
Concord, MA. His first marriage was 9 Feb 1737
to Sarah Bacon, who died leaving four children. We have no dates of
death
for either Nathan or his second wife Mary
Bigelow. They may have emigrated to Vermont.
>From records at Harvard, MA we take the births of three daughters of
Nathan
Brooks and his wife Mary Bigelow:
16211.1 Mary, bapt 5 Jan l752 Harvard.
16211.2 Abigail, bapt 24 Jun 1759 Harvard.
16211.3 Sarah, bapt 29 Aug 1766 Harvard.
Although this is a bit confusing, I think that this Mary Bigelow is
the
second wife of Nathan Brooks whose first wife was Susannah Bacon.
The
family seems to have completely disappeared from Harvard and I see
a note
that they "may have emigrated to Vermont". I am curious as to
why it is
thought that they could have gone to Vermont since Nathan Brooks son,
David
Brooks (by first wife, Susannah Bacon) is thought to be the David Brooks
who
was in Chester, Windsor Co. VT - my 4th ggrandfather. I have
never been
able to prove or disprove that he is the "real" David Brooks and at
this
point, would be happy to simply locate some of the rest of his family
nearby
but unfortunately, I have had no success in finding Nathan Brooks'
children
by Susannah Bacon or Mary Bigelow. At this point, all I have
is my David
Brooks who roughly fits the age criteria to have been Mary Bigelow's
stepson. There are numerous websites that declare him to be so
however,
once again, absolutely no documentation other than the little unsourced
published Brooks genealogy by Lee & Mae Corless. Again, any
assistance
would be greatly appreciated. BTW - the Harvard Vital Records
show
additional children of Nathan Brooks m Mary Bigelow: Elizabeth
Brooks
September 30, 1753 and Zaccheus Brooks November 16, 1760.
Interestingly, the Silas Harris of #1 had a daughter who married the
son of
David Brooks of #2 - they were my 3rd ggrandparents. Proving
the ancestry
of both have proven to be exceedingly difficult so perhaps, there is
some
clue within the Bigelow family. BTW - it seems to me that if
I do manage to
prove the Brooks upline, eventually, I get a Bigelow of my very own.
Looking forward to hearing from you,

Can't tell you how
happy I was to come across your Bigelow Society postings......have long
been curious about the relationships between the families represented by
the markers in the Turner/Roberts cemetery. Had just returned from
a McKinney family reunion in Plattsburgh this weekend including trips to
the South Plattsburgh cemetery and the Turner /Roberts house. My wife's
family connections are McKinney/Roberts James McKinney married Amarilla
Roberts dau of Major John Roberts III Christmas day 1815 at Salmon River.
Amarilla's brother P.J.Roberts was the occupant of the house and his marker
was found along with that of his two wives behind the home among the sumac
& Lilacs.
He was Justice of the Peace for the town.
Two items for you Mark Bigelow's
wife Orilla Sutphen Smith is the daughter of Alexander Smith and Henrietta
Sutphen and the SISTER of Sidney Sutphen Smith Julia McKinneys husband.
The bulk of the Smith family moved to Wisconsin about 1865 and settled
in Winnebago Co. (Vinland Twp) I was there less than a month ago
while visiting my daughter in Fond Du Lac and made a trip to the Allenville
cemetery where I was delighted to find the bulk of the Smith clan interred.
The second item is for Polly Bigelow
we have no record of a Jeremiah Roberts but have her married to Christopher
Roberts son of John Roberts Jr. and Ednah Hillard.....I think if you take
a close look at her marker you will see it is Christopher and not Jeremiah.
Hope this is helpful! When I get a chance to go through the rest
of the Bigelow listings I might have some questions for you. If I can be
of help do not hesitate to contact me.
