Hello,
My great-grandmother Nellie Stephens, daughter of
Andrew Stephens and Olive Bigelow, married a Joel Wheaton who
was also born in Colchester, CT. Joel died from an horse and
wagon accident in Lyme, CT. where they lived, leaving
several children, my grandfather Albert Edgar Wheaton is one
of their children. After his father's death his mother could
not care for all of the children he went to live with family/friends
in Lebanon, CT. The family got separated. Do you have
any information on this family?

Subject: John Winthrop/Winthrop Woman.
Date: Mon, 13 Mar 2000 17:09:35 EST
From: Dee Cary JHSB@aol.com
I was pleased to find your message on the
Warren/Bigelow web page. I have done quite a lot of research on our
ancestors, many of whom came with Winthrop and before. I have also
visited many of the places in England re research, including these villages.
You mentioned that you are very knowledgeable on Winthrop.
Being a descendant of Bigelow and Warren.
I have spent some time trying to locate the documents re the incident that
the Warrens/Knapps were responsible for Elizabeth leaving Mass in 1649.
as quoted in the book, the Winthrop Woman. This book is listed an
'historical researched' novel, not a biography, and mentions the reason
for Elizabeth Fones leaving Watertown in 1649 was an accusation of witchcraft
by the Goody Warrens and Knapps.
From my research, this appears to me to be
unfair and unfounded statement, and placed in the book by the author to
give a dramatic content. Some folks are inclined to take this a little
too seriously. Therefore could you, or a Winthrop researcher, quote/give
me a documental source/evidence for this incident? I have been unable
to locate any and the recent NEHGR article on Capt. Patrick, confirms that
she left Mass. because she was living with Mr. Hallett, and therefore unacceptable
to their strict Puritian 'ways'.
As you mentioned in your letter, people take
what is written as the undisputed truth. The book is a novel, so the author
did not have to write with historical accuracy, but to market a book, and
protect her heroine's image. I have no problem with that, but if
the Warren/Knapp family are as I believe totally innocent, (they did live
next to Rev. George Phillips in England and members of his church!!), then
a correction by one of her Winthrop descendants, prior to a TV documentary,
would be a gracious gesture
and in keeping with such a lady.
Yours sincerely, Dee Cary.

Hi Rod...
W. David Lewis' book, FROM NEWGATE TO DANNEMORA : THE RISE OF THE PENITENTIARY
IN NEW YORK, 1796-1848 (Ithaca: Cornell U. Press, 1965), makes mention
of a John Bigelow who was apparently an inspector at Sing Sing prison.
Bigelow, Lewis writes, was an innovator, and among other things sought
to allow prisoners a ration of chewing tobacco. "[I]t will be the
source of great happiness to the poor devils," wrote Bigelow in his diary
in February, 1846 (quoted in Lewis, p. 242ff).
Lewis describes Bigelow on p. 241 as follows: "Bigelow was young,
well educated, and idealistic. He had tried his hand at being a lawyer,
a writer, and a journalist, and at this stage of his career was dissatisfied
with his accomplishments. At first, he appears to have accepted the
inspectorship primarily as 'an office which without complicating my position
in politics establishes me in the confidence and respect of men whose consideration
it is desirable to maintain,' but soon became genuinely interested in penal
problems."
Lewis' footnotes note that an MS diary of this John Bigelow is available
at the New York Public Library. Also noted are two books: (1)
Margaret Clapp, FORGOTTEN FIRST CITIZEN: JOHN BIGELOW, Boston, 1947 and
(2) John Bigelow, RETROSPECTIONS OF AN ACTIVE LIFE, New York, 1909-1913.

I am the Great-great-granddaughter of Alonzo Chapman and Rosette or
Rosetta Bigelow. They had two sons, Amos Chapman and Hiram Agustus,
who married Rachel Ann Deal or Dale. I can find nothing about her
parents except a possibility her parents were "Dale" and "Paugh", but I
remember my Grandmother saying her name was Rachel Dale and she died when
my Grandmother, Rachel Irene Grace Chapman (b4/8/1888, d 4/2/1970) was
a little girl. The birthdate I have for her, Rachel Ann Dale (or
Deal), copied from the family Bible, was 3/18/1848.

I'm searching for the family links of Henry Veeder BIGELOW, who married
Mary Tupper on July 17, 1900 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. She was born
Nov 21, 1877 in Bay of Islands, Newfoundland, the daughter of John S. Tupper
and Elizabeth Blanchard Waddell. Henry was the son of James Edward
Bigelow and Henrietta Agnes Hood, about whom I have no
information. I'm assuming from the location that James Edward
was a descendant of Amasa Bigelow, b. Feb 11, 1755 in Colchester, New London,
CT, d. 1799 in Cornwallis, Kings Co., NS and his wife Roxanna ( or Rosena)
Cole, but am missing some generations.
Also, - does anyone have the name of Roxanna (or Rosena) Cole's mother?
Her father was Reuben Cole, b. May 30, 1723 in East Haddam, Middlesex,
CT., d. 1798 in Nova Scotia, and his wife shows up in the records only
as "Nem".

Comments: This has been on my "Favorites" since 1998, just after Mr.
Bigelow died. I think. Real happy to see all the
improvements you have added, and that it is now updated to 1/2000.
I have been comparing my pages of "LOOMER
FAMILY AND ALLIED LINES" and the pages on BIGELOW researched
in the Burton Collection of the Detroit Main
Library before 1981. My information shows Isaac (gen4) Bigelow
married to Abigail Skinner, daughter of Ebenezer and
Sarah (Lord) Skinner. (not Abigail Lord) I am a descendant of
1592C.t AMASA BIGELOW (gen 5) m. Rosina (Roxanna)
Cone. If I hunt further in your pages, I hope to find them,.
I am so far, very pleased with your beautiful work. Hope to see
more about Vol. II. Used to get the FORGE", AND HAVE MANY OLD
COPIES ON MY SHELF. Used to live in
Pontiac, Mi. and attended 1 reunion held in Daytona, FL. Thank
you for all you are doing. Keep it up. There are quite a
number of BIGELOW descendants who moved to S.E. Wisconsin. I
am also descended from Amasa's daughter SARAH
BIGELOW who m. Benjamin Rand. Have pictures of her, and her sister
Ruby in an album. Further tracing goes to daughter of Sarah Bigelow and
Benjamin Rand to dau: Lavina Ann Rand m. James McHugh (my greatgreat grandparents)
and then their
daughter Mary Jane McHugh b. 1841 m. Harris Loomer. I have 2 large
framed pictures of these, my great-grandparents in
my home office! There is a large annual reunion of the LOOMER FAMILY
ASSOCIATION in Walworth Co. WI.
(#68 in August.)
More:
I am preparing a number of pages copied from a book that I compiled
in 1982. Some of the information was exerpted from Loring Bigelow's
FORGE articles and are in more details than what you are presenting. Perhaps
other will also be interested in these pages. I also have added in
the pages of the descendants through my lines. I am Nancy Lee Hanson Owen
in generation 12. I have included the known descendants through
the Bigelow Lines and my LOOMER cousins. You have a great
Web site going.
