living with him and his 2nd wife Susan.

Mary E.   She is 6 yrs old in 1870 census

 Wesley L.

Franklin Co. Probate Court,Greenfield, MA,  docket 24,  6 June 1870, C. E Severance petitions the Court for the appointment of guardian of the three children above. Horatio assents to granting the forgoing petition as surviving parent.

In the Docket file 5679, Franklin Probate Court,  indexed as adoption is found a slip of paper which quotes See Chapter 173 of the Acts of 1951.  On the file cover of the adoptions is found Mary E. Bigelow  = Mary E. Culver;
Wesley L. Bigelow = Wesley L. Culver; Henry Culver Bigelow = Henry Allen Steele. Nothing further on the adoptions or any additional children if any by 2nd marriage.
NEW 4/25/99 I believe that I may have created a little confusion concerning the mention of a legal document for Horatio H. Bigelow 1555E.1. I hope this will clear up my error.
The legal document referred to is the index to the legal documents in Franklin County, Probate Court, Greenfield, MA, Index Book 1812-1825, Franklin Division Probate Court in the County of Franklin - Prior to Jan. 1, 1926, is found in the above index, a guardian petition under surname Bigelow and is listed Horatio Howe's minors (1870). Legal reference is for Horatio H. Bigelow 1555E.15 and not for 1555E.1.  So far this is the only reference to any of the Horatio H. Bigelows having Howe as a middle name that I know of. I believe that the name Horatio Howe Bigelow was passed down from generation to generation just as several other names in this family such as Samuel Smith Bigelow, etc.

I'm writing about a book of poems and essays that are satires on some of his contemporaries' works--folks like Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel Hawthorne.  It's not usual nowadays for distinguished physicians and botanists to be so adept at this type of thing, and I'm exploring this aspect of his career because I think it's so interesting.

I have just obtained the obituary that appeared in the Chicago Journal on September 14, 1917 of Captain John Bigelow.  I have posted it on my web page.  If you would like it for the Bigelow Website you are more than welcome to it.
Interestingly enough it listed that he had a daughter and grandchildren.  When Don was alive we didn't think he had children...I
tend to think this was a step-daughter...but have to do more research. I will pull out his pension and military records to double check.

They were probably living in Northfield Minnesota in the 1870s and later.  She also had an uncle Alex and she wrote a
letter to a A T Bigelow DDS (16C52.82) in Boston around 1860-1870 (the day is on the letter, but not the year!)

Hello Rod, I just fold this web page tonight. I have been trying to find out more information about the Baguley. I have a great grandfather Samuel BAGULEY who came to Philadelphia, Pa and married in 1898 to Laura Childs, whom I am a descendent.
Some time later Samuel returns to England, as he has fallen and broken his hip and in those days they did not have pins. His people apparently were able to help him. According to his death certificate he dies on 25 Aug 1919 in Northern Counties Hospital in the County of Stockport, England. He was born in Droylsden to Edwin and Mary Jane Wallworth.
Edwin is son of Frederic Baguley according to his will. I don't have any further information. Do you know what religion the Baguley's normal are?
Do you have a database of Baguley? I live in a small town called Buda, Il, USA.

As part of a series on local East Lansing MI pioneers, I did a story on the Horace Bigelow (15198.82) family. Using information from the Bigelow web site I said his wife's name was Helen Sturgis. I have been corrected that the name on her gravestone and in official papers is Almira. They had a daughter Helen M. Bigelow (15198.821). In rechecking the web
site I find that her mother was Ann Jenette (Fitch) Bigelow. Information from the site says that Horace and Helen were married in 1845 and Helen M. was born in 1846. I know that the mother was a Sturgis because the two families (Bigelows and Sturgises) moved to what is now East Lansing and settled neighboring farms. There seems to be something wrong about
the Ann Jenette Fitch information. The Helen or Almira information may have a problem, although Helen might have been a middle name.

15331.1291t    Robert Payn, b 10 Dec 1863; d 06 Sept 1955 Boston, MA; m 09 Nov 1911 Caroline Evans; 1 known child. It is interesting to me because this entry concerns my grandfather.  There are some little details you might want to correct.  For one, he spelled his middle name with an "e",  that is he was known as Robert Payne Bigelow. Secondly, you have mistaken his wife's (my grandmother's) original middle name for her maiden name.  She was Caroline Evans Chase before she married, and referred to herself as Caroline Chase Bigelow after marriage.  You are correct in noting that he had only one child, my father Robert Otis Bigelow. My grandmother is going to be 101 in April and remembers "Nick" Bigelow from North Wolcott. Her memory is untarnished and talks a lot about my g-g-grandfather,Charles Richards, and his best friend Nicholas Bigelow. On some of my g-g grandfather's CW pension papers, Mr. Bigelow went with him to various meetings about the pension and signed papers as a witness. I have gone up to the old homestead twice this past year and know approximately where the Bigelows lived. (On the lake) (I have a distant picture of their homestead in late 1800's-early 1900's) They both were in the the Civil War, different regiments. Often talked about the war, which the women and children were notable to share in. I believe this "Nick" may have named his oldest son after my g-g grandfather, one William Charles Bigelow. Be more than glad to share. I am from Horseheads, NY. My name is Frank Patterson. I have looked hard for the regiment that Mr.Bigelow served in and any picture of him. Grandma would get such a kick to see one if it were available. He will be in my book, if I ever get it done.It is basically about my g-g grandfather and my best friend who was killed in Vietnam on Mothers Day, May 12,1968.
I have an original picture,of which I am going to make a copy of the Nicolas Bigelow house on Lake Ontario. Distant shot, but shows what the area looked like close to a hundred years ago.I am really interested to see if any of your relatives have a picture of Nicholas Bigelow in order that I could show my Grandmother and possibly use in the book I am writing about g-g grandfather,Charles Richards.Grandma descibes them as "very, very good friends" spent a lot of time together.Described Nicholas as having a full gray beard, had some kind of growth that was distinguishing, etc.Remembers his father Charles Lewis B.and sons, Frank, Leona, etc.

Just visited your Society page again and what a surprise to find all of the information on Roderick and Sabrina Utter Bigelow and family. I have two comments to add.  I beleive you made an error on locations. Rock County, Johnstown and Jefferson are both located in Wisconsin - not Pennsylvania.  Second, Elizabeth Betsy could have been two different people. They had a daughter by that name and Sabrina's brother, Benedict Birch Utter(my grgrandfather) had a daughter by that name.  They lived at Cold Spring, just south of Jefferson in 1850.  She could have been helping Sabrina with the children or just visiting.  Also the Rockwell household in Jefferson was another Sister-Sally Utter Rockwell.  There was a third Elizabeth Betsy(another sister) born in 1811 but she lived in Port Dover, Ontario. Both of the other two were born in 1834. I will check the 1850 census and see if there is a difference. I hope this does not confuse anyone.  Carol Helen Carlson

Thanks for your information in response to my inquiry. I have researched the spouse's family for about three years and would like to respectfully submit some clarifying information in relation to Robert & Elizabeth Bigelow and their families.
Per the marriage license/record on microfilm at the Haydon Burns Main Library,Florida History Room in Jacksonville, FL, Robert Bigelow married Mrs. Elizabeth A. Brown (not Broadalbane).
The marriage license was obtained on 25 Feb 1832; the marriage took place on 26 Feb 1832; S.J. Eubanks, JP, performed the service; the marriage was recorded and filed 28 Mar 1832.
This information is also found on page 34 of Duval County Florida Marriages 1823-1867, compiled and published by Aurora C. Shaw, 1983, ©1969, 1970 SG ED.
Robert Bigelow's spouse, Elizabeth (Betsey) Ann, was the daughter of Rebeckah Hart Richard and John B. (Juan Batiste) Richard. She was born 2 Dec 1805 on the South bank of the St Johns River, East Florida. She was previously married
to Thomas Brown, Jr. according to LDS records.
I have been stumped by the appearance of M. McG. Breadalbane who was the administrator of Rebeckah Read's estate, and who is buried between Rebeckah and her daughter, Elizabeth Bigelow, in the Bigelow Family Cemetery. This is probably the "Broadalbane" referred to in your family history as Betsey's surname at the time of her marriage to Robert Bigelow.
The 1860 Duval County, Florida census lists a "McGregor Breadalbane," age 35 who is an Engineer, born in Florida. There is also a "Macomb Breadalbane" in the same census, age 30 and a Labourer, also born in Florida.
There is no record in Florida or Georgia of a marriage between Elizabeth and a Breadalbane. However, the burial placement in the cemetery and a Breadalbane appearing as Rebeckah's executor gives strong circumstantial evidence that Elizabeth or her mother had a connection to that family name. Had Elizabeth married a Breadalbane, the two males listed on the 1860 census would likely be her sons. Can you provide me with a reference to the "Broadalbane" listed in your records?
I am focusing my research on Elizabeth's mother, Rebeckah, and have diligently searched primary and secondary records for the past three years. The Breadalbane character has me stymied and I would gratefully appreciate any help you can offer.
Finally, a few interesting facts: I have visited the Bigelow Family Cemetery and found local genealogical/historical data which records the information on the headstones at the cemetery. Eugene Bigelow, son of Robert and Elizabeth, is listed as a "Confederate Soldier." He and his first wife, Anna, along with three of their children, are buried in the family plot.
Robert Bigelow, his daughter, her husband and a five year old grandson all died within a few months of each other. Since my focus has been on Rebeckah, I haven't researched the cause of the deaths but speculate that they're connected.
Robert Bigelow died 8 Aug 1868
        Minerva B. Turknett died 7 Dec 1868
        George A. Turknett died 20 Sept 1868
George Mongin Turknett died 20 Sept 1868.
Geo. M. was the son of Eugene Bigelow and Anna F. Turknett Bigelow.

My apologies for the length of this email.  I hope you can shed some light on the Breadlbane connection.  And I hope I have helped with this information.     Ann White

One last request: do you know of any living descendants of Robert Bigelow in Duval County or Florida - or anywhere for that matter - that I might communicate with for additional information?  Thanks again  :-)
