From:    Sylvia Anderson  <sdta3@yahoo.com>
Enclosed is a time line of sorts for the family of Isaac W. Bigelow taken from his pension files.  Most were applications for pay increase and medical examinations.  There was no mention of children/dependents and only the one reference to his wife Rosina.  It is possible that he and his wife Rosina were seperated or divorced, they do not show up together in 1880 and Isaac seems to have wandered westward to where his elders son's were living, while his wife was in Minnesota.  Sylvia Trotter Anderson > sdta3@yahoo.com

Subject: Bigelow & Dowse Razor for sale
Received: 2/7/03 5:43:10 PM
From: "Michalene Kosinski" <michalen@bicnet.net>
I was researching the following razor made by Bigelow & Dowse and came across your geneology information.
I wonder if you can provide me with the years that Bigelow & Dowse
Company was in operation, and if possible the age of the razor which is
on consignment in my Antiques Shop.
The razor was brought in to me in the Charles Mueller case. I am not
sure if the Bigelow and Dowse made the razors as promotional items for
Charles Mueller Company in Boston, or not.
Any information you can provide will be appreciated. The box with the
razor are currently priced at $175.
Should you or another family member wish to purchase them, I am sure
that my consigner would be willing to offer you a discount.
Chas. Mueller Boston, Mass. Tip Top Straight Razor
This wonderful old straight razor was made by Bigelow and Dowse Company,
                       Germany.
On one side of the embossed dark brown case (which is in very worn
condition), it has the words "Chas. Mueller 930 Washington Street,
Boston, Mass. " and on the other part, the words "Tip Top". This box is
made of a hard cardboard-like material and opens in the middle. It
                       measures approximately 6-5/8"X 1-3/8" X ½".
The Bigelow and Dowse Company razor itself is in great condition with a
smooth, grained yellow handle. There is no rust or pitting on this
                       piece.
The handle is smooth and measures approximately 5-3/4". The blade
measures approximately 5-1/2" and has the words "Bigelow & Dowse Co
Germany"on one side of the hilt, and on the other is the number 540.
Thank you in advance for your help.

I am wondering if you have information regarding Sarah Fiske Gibbs who married William Henry  Bigelow 30 Mar 1817 at Oxford, Ma.
I descend from her sister, Sabra (aka Sabrina) who married William E. Stebbins 25 Mar 1827 at Oxford, Ma.
Any information will be helpful. I know the mother was Mary (aka Polly) Cannon, but do not know Polly's parents.
Has anyone has ever checked the death of Sarah Fiske (Gibbs) Bigelow who died 27 FEb 1864 in Webster,
Ma.? The death might possibly give the maiden name of her mother, which I think was Cannon/Canon.

Rod, I wrote to appr. two years ago with some Bigelow info: I have a little more for you.
I have found info on Clarimond M. Bigelow, dau of Oliver G. Bigelow and his lst. wife Elizabeth.
I found Clarimond on the 1850 Census of Cattaraugus co., N.Y. with her parents as a 4 year old; on the 1860 Catt. Census as a 14 yr. old; on the 1865 Catt. Co. census as a 19 year old. I next find her on the 1880 Censu of Benzie Co., Mich. with her husband, Henry D. Andrus  at the age of 34. I have recently found her burial record; she was buried in the Inland Township Cem., of Benzie Co., Mich. she was listed as a resident of Inland at her death, Her burial date was 27 Mar., 1892; I can't find a death record as yet. To my knowledge she and Henry Andrus had no children although Henry remarried and had a couple by his 2nd. wife. I will continue to look for a death record for Clarimond and will send if I do find it.

I did get to sya bye to her as well as the other two childeren she had  Leslie Ervin Harris  and Kenneth James Ball . and god had given me the vision of the other side and how she was going to be so much better there than here ...this vision came before she passed the same day in 7th hour AM while she passed in the 7th hour in the PM . I was thinking she was going to get better . well I am sure you will be sad to hear of this news but willing to make sure it gets where it needs to be. Thank you so very much ,

I've found 3 Great Great Uncles military records.  First of all, Amos A.-
16164.9At, joined Company H 5th NY Cavalry at the age of 34 in 1861 in Crown
Point NY.  This unit saw a lot of action, including Bull Run, Antietam,
Gettysburg and Appomattox Court House.  His two younger brothers got
involved after they moved to Wisconsin with my Great Great Grandfather
Joseph after Catherine Chilcot Bigalow died (her gravestone stands in the
Stevenson Cemetery in Westport NY).
Daniel W.-16164.9Ct joined the 49th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment in 1864
which saw virtually no action (guard duty at some obscure fort).

However, Hiram O. -16164.9E joined the 10th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment in
1861 and was involved in Sherman's Campaign, seeing action at the Battle of
Peachtree Creek (site of which was less than a 1/2 mile from where I now
write this).  He was mustered out in Marietta a few months later (a few
miles North of Atlanta) and therefore did not participate in Sherman's
infamous March to the Sea.  (I just knew I wasn't the first of my direct
family to see Atlanta!)

 Hi Rod,
I want to correct a mistake that was made on 15923.711t Israel S. Bigelow.  I gave his parent
as Eunice Bigelow 15923.713 that is not true....His parents are the following:  15923.71 Israel L Bigelow and Nancy A Soffer Born 09/06/1794  Died 08/26/1824.  At
this time Israel S 15923.711t went to live with his uncle 15923.77t Dr. Eliphaz Bigelow.  After Nancy's death Israel L 15923.71 married Sarah Miller Born
01/10/1799 and died 08/11/?   This is all written in Bigelow family bible records that were received from the Westmoreland Co. Historical
Society.     Also a another mistake made on this line is that Israel L.15923.71  died in Centre Co. PA not Center Co. OH.
The children of 15923.711 Israel Stover Bigelow his child 15923.7119t Israel S. Bigelow is actually Isaac S Bigelow he was also the
youngest son.  His birth date was correct as being 01/27/1859.  His marriage date was also correct as 09/29/1887.  The wife listed is
incorrect.  His wife was Mary A. VanDuyce of Dubuque, Iowa and one daughter Emily born 04/29/1889.  Emily married a J. M. Dick of
Aurora, ILL.  There was also a son Israel who is not listed,  he lived in Bozeman, Montana then moved to Long View, Washington.  This
can be verified by history of Dubuque County, Iowa 1911.  The Dubuque Herald Thursday March 22, 1900  the obit of Dr I. S. Bigelow.
The Telegraph Herald, December 12, 1927.  The obit of Dr. I. S. Bigelow.   I have all ready sent you a copy of those papers.

Hi Rod:
I emailed you a couple of years ago about the suspected divorce
of Poultney and Edith Bigelow sometime around 1910. I have journals
written by a family friend, Edward I. Horsman, Jr., who visited them
Jun 1901 at their summer home in France. Clearly Edith was not happy in
the marriage and wrote a novelette "The Middle Course" which appears
autobiographical.....so much so that Edward Horsman was concerned
should Poultney read it! I have the novelette published in 1903 and
am purchasing the installment version published in "The Smart Set"
Jun 1901 issue. I am planning to publish the journals and would like
to know as much about the principals before doing so: I'm trying to put
a human face on them all. Is there any chance of obtaining information
about the divorce? Is it covered in Poultney's 2 volume autobiography
or letters?
I would be happy to provide you excerpts from the journals which
address these relationship. I'm also interested in how the Horsmans
(Edward Sr. was the founder of Horsman Toys perhaps the major toy manufacturer
and importer at the turn of the century) and Bigelows might have
come to be such close friends. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Rod.
As you probably remember, I am your distant cousin Richard (Lennard Richard Smiraldi) - 12 generations from Anna Fiske and John
Bigelow. I was wondering if you knew anything about my great great grandfather Abraham Lincoln Bigelow and his part in bringing the telephone out to the mid-west. (Hence the Bigelow Exchange).
I know Alexander Graham Bell's assistant was a relative (or so I've been told) and the family likes to think it was our relative who actually
made the telephone discovery.
Do you know anything about our relationship to Benjamin Franklin (his wife was a Bigelow). True, Ben has a terrible history with the family
because of the ill-manner in which he treated his wife. Most of the family say he's a relative - but only by marriage!
I'm interested in getting more involved in our family history. My sister Lisa Christiansen is in the process of joining the D.A.R. Once this is
accomplished, I will join the S.A.R., but I don't think we can join the S.R. or the Mayflower Society (I think we came over 10 years after the
Mayflower).
Thanks for any help you can give.
Best regards,
Richard Smiraldi

Bigelows, Howes, Parmenters, Rices, Taintors and Cashmans all came in through Boston in the 1600's. Grandma's father was  John Bigelow of the Northborough/Marlborough area, and he practiced architecture. Her mother was a Howe
(my great great grandfather was Horace Bigelow, an entrepaneur and social liberal who owned a shoe factory in Worcester Ma. He instituted profit sharing in his company, built the White City amusement park in Worcester and later donated it's electric generating plant to the city).  Her first husband was a Murray (2 children, Anne and Margie) and her second was Paul Parmenter (2 kids, Dan- my father- and John, in CA now). She and grandpa Paul were distant cousins, the Bigelows and Parmenters having known each other since at least the 1750's if not longer. My father Dan Parmenter married Kathleen Loughman (pron "Lockman"), the Loughmans being from MA (Cape Cod) and NY (the Bronx- my great grandfather was a military man and moved a lot. He was high ranking officer in the Navy and a set a record for
the deepest sea dive in about 1913). I'm ashamed at  the moment to say I can't remember much about the Bigelow line beyond John Bigelow, although I do know family tales dating back to the French and Indian War.

I am looking for info. on my great-grandmother, Mary J. Bigelow b. Webster, Ma., mid 1800's. Her husband was Charles A. Angell b. E.Douglas, Ma.
More:
I think you're right. I have my grandfather's birth certificate. It lists her place of birth as Webster, Ma. but that could be wrong. The
dates and places seem possible. I've also found out that my grandfather had a sister Mary (Angell) who died on Oct. 24,1922.
I have been in touch with a relative in MA. who confirmed that Mary J. Bigelow was born in Oxford, MA. on Aug. 5, 1831 and married Charles A.
Angell on June 29, 1851. My grandfather, Richard John Angell was born in Oxford, MA. on Oct. 18, 1872. There was also a daughter Mary who
died on Oct. 24,1922. I'm not sure yet about any other children.
I've found that Mary died March 6, 1882. I'm nor sure where but will forward any new info. I have confirmed that she was my great-grandmother.
Mary Jane Bigelow (16117.617) died March 6, 1882 and is buried in South Cemetary, Oxford, MA.

Has anyone has ever checked the death of Sarah Fiske (Gibbs) Bigelow who died 27 FEb 1864 in Webster,
Ma.? The death might possibly give the maiden name of her mother, which I think was Cannon/Canon.Thanks       Norma Flude

The basic premise of the item you referred to Rod Bigelow is correct, the problem lies with verifying which Peter Roberts Alzina married, This is the same Peter Roberts that appears on the earlier census with Ethan Roberts son of Joseph.  The fact is that a Peter Roberts born abt 1816 to Joseph could mean that he was the brother of the Ethan on the
Plattsburgh census rather than the son of Ethan A Roberts & Sallie Odler. Would like to get a date of death to obtain a certificate to clarify but he last appears on the 1880 census and in 1900 Alzina is a widow.  As yet no verification either way. John

Got your OOOPS message dialing up New Historical Information, and wondered if I can get through to any new info as cited?
I am David Robert Bigelow, son of Robert Bigelow, son of Scott Bigelow of Poughkeepsie, NY State.
I have very much appreciated the various links to get info on the thirteenth century. Any tips to zero in on any new documents welcome. My last thorough browse was four months ago.

Rod,
I have just come across your Bigelow Society web site, and am interested
in some material.
During the past year I have been able to trace my line back to James
Bigelow (b 1762, MA , dc 1842 Wayne County, PA).  I can document back to
Edwin A. bc 1828 with b & d records and Edwins' CW discharge papers, plus
census and a county history indication James Howe and James.
Does the Bigelkow genealogy provide documentation and anecdotals, or just
names and dates?  Either way, I am interested in acquiring a copy.
Thanks for the good work in making the material available.

almostSubject: Correction to A.J. Biglow page

From: Mike Biglow <mjb5491@iname.com>
I just checked the Orvis Furman Bigelow webpage and noticed some
corrections and additions for you.
http://bigelowsociety.com/rod8/orv86325.htm
1.  Pingree is commonly spelled "Pingry," as noted.  Pingry was
Orvis's wife's family name, and she was the daughter of a Vermont judge.  The
family spells the name "Pingry."
also
On Marcus James Bigelow's webpage,  his wife's name was "Emily Jane
Wallace," so the name "Emily" should be added before the Jane.
http://bigelowsociety.com/rod7/mar72a26.htm
also
I guess I had never bothered to read the website on A.J. Biglow
before, as we were the source of that information, I didn't see the need!
Also, I had not realized for a long while that you, Rod, had done such a
tremendous amount of good work to get the genealogy onto the web.
Anyway, regarding this URL:
http://bigelowsociety.com/rod8/ado86321.htm

First, A.J. spelled the family name "Biglow" as did apparently his
father  Barna, although A.J.'s brother Orvis Furman, the Amherst physician,
apparently used "Bigelow," at least as it shows in contemporary
newspaper articles.

I just tried to contact the Kent Holbrook guy, whose address was holbrookstein@juno.com. He no longer has that email address.  Do
you by any chance have a current email address for him or a postal address.

    Aug 1830; m 2 Nov 1818 Joel Fay of Sutton. 15321.55 Hannah

when I tried the link at /rod/hum63215.htm
I got a "dead link" message.  Then I went into the mother directory,
but I could not find a page that looked similar.  So then I went to your
main page, and couldn't find what I wanted.
Now I am writing to you.
Could you tell me or give me a link to what you know of this man and
this marriage and the offspring thereof?  I have a page on him at

but I am always interested in further information.  AND I would like
to find his daughter Mariah.

A Margaret Moore Bigelow married August 24 1893 in Story Co, Iowa to a Sidney G. Hamilton. Anyone have these people in their database.
Looking for their children.
Thanks for the info.  It undoubtably is the same Margaret as Sidney is buried in the Municipal cemetery also.  She must have outlived him. He died in 1923.  Just in case you want to know, Sidney was the son of Charles Hamilton (a Civil War Vet and buried in the same cemetery) and Tennetta Hanson.  Charles was born in NY.
1895 census states that Margaret and Sidney were Baptists. Sidney's father was Protestant, yet 3 of his other children were Episcopal. Does anybody know what religion Margaret's parents were?

1900 Iowa census lists Sidney G. and Margaret M. Hamilton of Story co, with dau Alleen A. born Feb 1895.
I found out that Margaret Bigelow Hamilton died in 1948.
Margaret died May the 17th in Seattle, WA. Her spouse, Sidney died Feb 19th in Silver Bow, Montana! H.
I am still trying to get Margaret Bigelow Hamilton's obit from
another when I decided that their dtr:  Alleen married a Phillips and is the
one in the SSI who died in 1968.  Today I rcd confirmation of that through a
small obit that I have forwarded to you.  It mentions a Ruth Bigelow Smith.
Can you fit her in? Helen

The attached obituary was printed in the Tuesday, September 10, 1968 Seattle Times.  According to the obit (hard to

Subject: FW: Correction! Ethan Allen Roberts Breakthrough Still Not A Reality
Date: 11 Dec 2002 07:32:48 -0800
Please accept my apologies.  I jumped the gun about having a
breakthrough with the ancestry of Sally Odler (Odell)  the wife
of Ethan Allen Roberts.  Liane Fenimore kindly pointed out that
the Sarah (Sally) Odler b. in 1796 was shown in an LDS Ancestral
File to have married a William Bowron (in the year 1816) and
had a daughter through this union named Charlotte.  Our Ethan
A. Roberts and Sallie Odler had children born between 1810 and
1828.
Never-the-less,  I think research suggests that we may be related
to the Odell families living near in or near Odelltown, Canada.
There were several Odell ancestors with the name Sarah from
that clan.  Any suggestions or discoveries on your part will
be welcome.

Hi Rod,
Your page Baguley Page 5, that is still on the web, has given me lots of problems. It would seem that the whole page was attrbuted to me when it
clearly was not my page. In particular the mention of the Royal connection through Lucy Carona. The first time that I heard that statement was from seeing the family tree from Cecelia M Johnson-Baguley. As far as I know Lucy Coroun (Corona), daughter of who knows?  was the wife of Hugh De Coroun of Adlynton
(Died 1291). Lucy then married Sir William de Baggiley. I would like to know how this doubtful parentage of Royalty came to be so widely proposed without any back up detail? I hope that you can shed some detail on this point. Barry

discovered more about Folger and his father thanks to your family
website....Passing this painting along to you as an FYI....I now live in

interested in knowing more about Folger even though he lost his life
tragically at such a young age...Thanks...Bob Harrison
Dear Rod;
I have a watercolor painting which bears a signature that reads "D F Bigelow." A newspaper clipping (Press Scimitar, Memphis, Tenn, Wednesday, August 21, 1940), attached to the back of the frame, describes the watercolor as a gift from the widow of the artist to his grandchild.
Curiosity about both the authenticity of the signature and the value of the work led me to your website. I thought you might like to have a picture of the work of art as well as a copy of the newspaper clipping attached to the back of frame.

It is a while since we corresponded.  It occured to me, today, to look at the DF Bigelow website and I saw the picture of the watecolor sent to you..  Interestingly, there are other emailposted from individuals in San Diego.  It seems that DF Folgers paintings have ended up here in high numbers.  One of the emails referred to the tragic death of Folger Allen Bigelow, also an artist.  Are details described in the website?
I have wondered how the watercolor in my possession came to leave the possession of Folger H Bigelow.  Do you know what would have caused its dispersal from the family member?  I did recieve an email from a daughter of Folger Allen Bigelow,  She asked how the watercolor came to my possession.
Yours sincerely,
