the basics obtained from the Bigelow Society files -- thanks to Don Bigelow
of the Whistle Hill Gang, but would like to know more of the family of
Lebbius Loomis7, and Isaac Leatherman8. I do know many of the descendants,
my cousins, of Isaac Leatherman and am contacting and obtaining information
from some of them (by snail mail and phone) that I will upload soon --
when I get it all together,
preferably, before this generation is gone). I will appreciate any
correspondence and would like to share information with anyone interested,
especially by Internet.

Descendant note:
After looking at some family photos, I found that my great-grandfather
was Wilbur Bigelow from Newton, Iowa (born 1870's?; died 1936 in California).
I think his father was Lowell Bigelow, possibly from Iowa....
Wilbur & Elizabeth (Harsh) Bigelow had an only child, Charles,
b. 1900's. Charles married Faye (Carter) Bigelow and had an only child,
Thomas Alan Bigelow, b.1931

I want to make sure I have all my sources correct on the Ferrand Bigelow
family. I am going to call a desc. of his dau. Sarah to get the
rest of
her line. I haven't talked to her for a year or so, but am going
to
Madison, WI, to see Mom, and Lucille lives there also. I am sure
we can
get together.
Ferrand Bigelow is buried in the old Eagle cem. next to his wife.
I have
pictures of his headstone, as well as Isaac Severence and others.
I could
send you jpgs of same if you are interested.
If anyone ever decides to visit Eagle, or Old World Wisconsin, the cemetery
is just before you turn the corner to Old World's entrance.

Have you anyting on Charles Hawkes Bigelow, who married circa 1845
to a
Miss Briggs. Marriage was in Northhampton or Springfield MA.
(I also have
an extensive line in Briggs)
Just got some information on my Temple line, and several Bigelows tie
in
there also. Same for my Hoag & Haseltine lines.
I keep collecting folks. I take all branches of families, as one
never
knows when one will find a vital connection.
Will have to wait a bit for Ferrand's line. I didn't connect with
cousin
Lucille, so I do not have her branch yet. She is descended from
Ferrand's
youngest, Sarah.
I have Civil War service cert. for Elverton, William and Franklin B.
all
sons of Ferrand. Elverton and William both served most of the war.
Franklin enlisted and was killed in the mine explosion at Petersburg,
VA.
Also have cert. for Francis A. Bigelow. I can include these in notes,
or jpg.
I also have letters Elverton wrote, one in 1865 when the armies were
gathering around Washington DC to be mustered out. As soon as
I can gather
info., it would probably make an interesting article for the Forge.
I also have info. on Elverton's granddaughter Ethelyn Minerva Parkinson,
dau. of Ethel Bigelow and James Nelson Parkinson. She is still living
at
92. She made her career as a children's books author. This
might also be
of interest to the Forge. Her "double cousin" was David Bigelow
Parkinson,
son of Truman David Parkinson & Minnie Bigelow. There has already
been an
article about him in the Forge.

Just a note to give you a quick report about our trip to Vermont.
It was a
wonderful trip. The weather was wonderful and even though we
live in the
foothills of the Berkshires and in the shadow of the Catskills we felt
like
"flatlanders" in the Green Mountains of Vermont. It has been
30 years since I
have been there and I had forgotten how beautiful it was.
We started off in the Town Clerks office of Ryegate Corners.
The clerk was
very helpful and I was able to find many of the Bigelow records, ie.
birth,
death and etc.
There were no surprises there but I bought the History of Ryegate,
published
in 1906 . It has the Bigelow genealogy as it pertains to that town.
I found
that Jabez6 died as a result of being kicked by a horse. The
town clerk told
us where the cemeteries were and we went searching. The first
one was easy to
find and we were able to find the graves of the John Bigelows.
The next cemetery was more of a challenge to find. It was on a dirt
road way
up a mountain. We found no Bigelows there.
By now it was late and the offices in Newbury were closed so we found
a motel,
ate and settled in for the night.
In reading the town history book that night I found that Jabez5 was
buried at
Wells River( the town between Ryegate and Newbury) In the morning
we stopped
at one of the little tourist info booths and asked where the cemetery
was.
Well, this was a trip and a half. The cemetery is up a mountain
and behind a
farm. One must go into the farmers driveway and proceed through
to the
cemetery. Fred and I went stone by stone looking for Jabez.
It is not an
easy task as many of the stones are in poor condition and almost impossible
to
read. At the very end of the cemetery were a group of stones
that appeared to
have no writing on them and were old. We looked behind them and
found that
the writing on them was on the other side. There, big as life
were Jabez5 and
Jabez6. Very exciting for me!!!! This was my first real
find. I must say
that it was almost spiritual and we are now rethinking our decision
about
cremation.
I took pictures and hope they come out well enough to read. The
stones were
in really good shape considering how some of the others around them
looked.
We visited the Newbury clerk next and got no info.
I hope I haven't gone on too long about this and bored you to tears.
I will
get all of this info together after I read the books,( I bought the
Newbury
History too). I will create pages about the Jabez's along with
the pictures
and scan them in to send you. If you want anything else let me
know. There
is a lot of info re John Bigelow 5 in this book. That info may
already be in
circulation.
Next, I guess I have to work on Paschal.

etc. of the 9th's participation in the attack on Petersburg Jun. 18th,
1864?
I'm doing last minute research
for book on Joshua L. Chamberlain and
his wife that will be published in the spring of 1999, but have started
work on a previously unpublished first person account of the Keystone
brigade at Petersburg. Chamberlain corresponded with Bigelow years
after
the war. Do you know if any of his letters to Bigelow still exist?

I believe I have located a daughter of Addi Bigelow (son of Isaac
Bigelow
and Abigail Skinner)and his first wife,Mary Nooney, about whose marriage
little is known.
Abigail Bigelow was born about 1780 in Montpelier, Vermont.
She married
Nathan Sisson II ( son of Nathan Sisson and Hannah Burdock) in Barre,
Vt on
April 24, 1803 (Addi Bigelow married his second wife in Barre, Vt.
in 1804)
Abigail Bigelow Sisson died in Enfield Ct. , the same place where Addi
and
Mary Nooney were married. She named her second son, my ggg granfather,
Addi
Bigelow Sisson(b. 6-16-1805 in Wilbraham, Mass.) She and Nathan had
12
children.( Nathan Sisson II Died in Wilbraham, Mass and the widow moved
to
Enfield ,Ct.)
Circumstances , dates and locations seem to point to this Abigail Bigelow
Sisson as being the daughter of Addi Bigelow and Mary Nooney. Do you
have
any other information on this marriage?

My name is Dale Sheldon and I am a descendant of Leafy Bigelow and
Amasa
Squier. There daughter, Evelyn, at the age of 81 in 1884, wrote
a family
history for the Bigelows which was basically everything she knew.
It pretty
much only contains information on her parents and grandparents and
is very
simple. She was very well educated and seems to have been a very
intelligent
woman. One point I would like to add from her history is that
of her
grandfather. She writes that the father of Olive Stone is Jonas
and not the
man you have mentioned. I have just found this information recently
and I
have not yet been able to find out any information on Jonas.
I did notice
that you have another man mentioned. I would be happy to send
you a copy of
this. I think I will be posting it on my own personal webpage.

In recent months I have become interested in the professional life of
Dr. Jacob Bigelow. From the few sources I have read, he appears to
have
been an important figure in 19th-century academic medicine and one
who
helped define a more rigorous method by which to assess medical
treatments. I am also under the impression that he was an early editor
for the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal - now the well known New
England Journal of Medicine.
I have a general interest in the history of medical statistics and
journalism; Dr. J. Bigelow was central to both of these issues during
his professional career.
If I am able to locate enough information I plan to write a short
biographical sketch of Jacob Bigelow with a focus on his role in early
19th century medical statistics and journalism.
As such, I thought that I would contact you for possible references.

I've just visited your well crafted "Hopestill (4) BIGELOW" page at

and am intrigued by a statement you make there - "Tenancy records show
that
Hopestill was a tenant of Philip Skene the British Loyalist".
I have reason to believe that one, perhaps two, of my ancestors were
also
tenants on Skene's Grants - Lawrence McKENZIE, a Mason, and (possibly)
Samuel ALLEN, a Farmer. I also believe that both left the area in 1777
or
so, and travelled to Quebec, later establishing settlement on the Gaspe
Peninsula.
But I digress.
Can you suggest to me where these 'tenancy records' might be now, and
how I
might either view them or obtain copies of the records? Any thoughts,
ideas, or suggestions will be most appreciated.

curiously, at the Library of Congress, while only transcripts are available

Rod, thanks for the site I am still enjoying it. Our family has
been on the Eastern Shore of Maryland since the late 1700's. There
are still quite a few of us in the Chestertown, Md. area. My great
grand father John Walter Bigelow was in the Union Army during the Civil
War, my sister Mary Ann Morris has his discharge papers. The most
of us have farming backrounds and interests, even though there are only
two who are still actively farming. My father was my hero.
He taught me to love the earth, and respect everything on it. We
also are Nanticoke, Cherokee decent, and that is where our teachings were
rooted. Well now you know a little about the Eastern Shore Bigelow's.

with my mother this week and have some information> I will be
getting more from her cousin Lucius who has our family bible.
Lucius was married to Susan Mosher. They had a son Lucius Horatio
who married Amelia Day Ward (dgt of Rev Usal Day
Ward), their son Lucius Horatio Jr married Ada Rafferty their son William
Kenneth married Elizabeth Delano Hitch. They had
two daughters, Gertrude Allerton and Elizabeth Delano. I have
dates etc. for many of these already and the next 2 generations
(mine and our children) I will have to get names of siblings
etc. from my cousin. Should I forward these to you. I will

It took me many weeks years ago to find the path from John to my
great grandfather (the only 2 names I had and it was fun, but to have

I just found the Bigelow homepage and it is quite impressive.
I know
you probably answer many questions, but I can't seem to solve this
on my
own. (I have tried for about 2 months now.) Here is my
story: My g-g
grandmother's name was Anjinette Morse Atha. She was born 11/11/1844
(not sure where) and died on April 20, 1909. She is buried in
Clarksburg Cemetary in Bourbon County, Kansas. My g-g grandfather
was
from Logan County, Ohio, so I assume she must have been from Ohio
originally. His name was William Thomas Atha, born 12/28/1848
and died
in Bourbon County on 12/2/1913. Anjinette's father's name was
Jason
(??) and his father was Alpheus Morse and I am assuming that his father
was Joseph Morse married to Eunice Bigelow. I believe the Morse's
to be
descended from Anthony Morse of England. If you know, can you
possibly
tell me if I am following the right line. Nothing seems to make
sense
with the Morses as they have so many first names that are the same.
Have you ever heard of an Anjinette in the descendent line?
Any help

In reading the two page on Eunice (5) Bigelow, I detected
a couple of dates
which were transposed.
First, just above the
second headstone photo, the reference to:

is a very thoughtful and attractively designed page, which I
really enjoyed reading. My mother was Gladys Elizabeth Morse,
and her
forbears are in the same Sherburne and Waltham, Massachusetts, Morse
line.

Whernside Court, Lorton, VA 22079-1540. My grandmother, who is
90, is the
only daughter of Frank Milton Speer Bigelow who was the son of Dr.
James
Harvey Bigelow who was interred in Andersonville Prison Camp during
the Civil
War. My Uncle recently did an interesting paper about his civil
war service
and internment. Amazingly enough he did survive. I had
no idea there was a
Bigelow family organization. I'm tickled to find out there is
and can't wait
to tell my Grandmother.

Was looking through some Bigelow genealogy and I think that we may
be
distantly related. My great-grandmother was Mary Bigelow -who was
married to the Rev. Richard Nott. Mary Bigelow's lineage goes
back to
John Bigelow. I have some of the same descendants that you had listed
on
your page. Would like to hear from you if you are. My grandmother was
Lena Irene Allen who married Rev. Nott's son-Maurice Armstrong Nott.
I'm
not sure how we are related-that will take some time to figure out.

I came across your web site. I am interested in the Thuseba Bigelow
(16251.65t) you have married to a Noah C. Thomas. I believe this
Noah C.
Thomas is a brother to one of my ancestors.
My ISP won't let me view all of your web pages, it says "Object Not
Found"
when I click on her name, so I am not sure if you are descended from
her or
not and I don't know anything more than the one page I see about her.

I have a new book ready, 1998, "LOOMER FAMILY AND ALLIED LINES
- BEFORE 1600" takes the family lines back to 307 AD (23 gen. before
Wm. the Conqueror of 1066) and to 250 AD, generations before King Alfred
the Great of England. This book should be of interest
to him, as it includes HIS LOOMER too. Thank you for your help.

Rod,
Thanks for sending my email address. I relocated the site in September
1997, and there are still some who haven't caught up with me.
However, I don't recall ever discussing the LOOMER family. I do have
BIGELOW ancestors and a BIGELOW narrative on my web site, but it doesn't
include any LOOMER - probably on another branch.
Just checked THE BIGELOW FAMILY GENEALOGY and find Lavinia (Loomer)
Bigelow's family on pages 282-83 and her brother David Loomer, husband
of
Rache (Bigelow) on page 284. The pertinent BIGELOW branch is from Samuel,
son of immigrant John, whereas I descend from Samuel's brother Jonathan.

and it took me to your website. I am a Michigan farm wife who

looking for her great-great grandmother. I have good reason to
believe
that as a widow she married a Zenas Bigelow who I think has ties to
Rock
County Wisconsin in 1848 and to Oceana County Michigan in 1879.

I hate to bother you, but I can't find any reference to the Bigelow
numbering system that explains it, such as, 15923.73C Isaac Leatherman8
Bigelow. Is it listed on the home page and I am missing it? The numbers
are
understandable(?), but the letters aren't. I need numbers for my own
kids,
so I will know who they are.
By the way, I am working on that Bigelow bunch, descendants of 15923.73C
Isaac Leatherman 8 Bigelow, who are mostly located in MO. and plan
to visit
them at their reunion next Spring in June(?). I hope to have a lot
more info
for the Bigelow Society, soon.
None of those people that I know of have computers, or are on the Internet,
so my communications with them is by telegraph and pony express riders.
But
I am getting a start.
