Daniel 3 BIGELOW

12A      Daniel 3 BIGELOW, son of Jonathan 2, (John 1), and Mary (OLCOTT) BIGELOW, was baptized 26 Mar 1693 in Hartford, Hartford co, CT. About 1718 he married Hannah BIDWELL, daughter of Daniel and Dorothy (BENTON) BIDWELL of Hartford. She died before 1728, leaving three children. Daniel married (2) 1728 Elizabeth RISLEY, who bore him two daughters. Elizabeth was a daughter of John and Mary (ARNOLD) RISLEY. (see below) She is thought to be the same who married (2) 24 Nov 1743 Thomas McCLEVE of Middletown, and had 2 more children.
     Daniel died 14 may 1733. On June 5th, his first wife's brother William BIDWELL was appointed administrator of the estate and guardian of the three older children: Hannah, age 14; Martha, age 11; and Daniel, age 8 1/2 years. From the records of CT, the following, dated May 1735:

     "On Memorial of William Bidwell, of Hartford, Administrator of the estate of Daniel Bigelow, late of Hartford, deceased: Showing to this Assembly the s'd Daniel Bigelow died intestate, leaving three children by his first wife, whose maiden name was Hannah Bidwell, which Hannah was owner of land when she married unto s'd Bigelow, and that the s'd Bigelow had by s'd Hannah, one son and two daughters which still survive, and that all the movable estate is not sufficient to pay all s'd Bigelow's just debts, and shewing that Martha, one of the daughters of s'd Daniel and Hannah, who is now 13 years old, is an idiot and wholly incapable of doing anything for herself, and memorialist would ask that some person be appointed to estate of s'd Martha to pay a bill of L 24, 12s, which was ordered, and appointed Joseph Pitkin and Jonathan Bull. "

     Mainwairing's Early Wills & Probate continues the record further with the petition of second wife Elizabeth on behalf of her two daughters for a share in the estate; this marriage and second family were totally overlooked by Howe.

From the probate records quoted above, are surmised the following children. By the first wife, Hannah (BIDWELL) :

12A1     Hannah, b 1719; d Tolland, CT; m 3 Nov 1740 Ezekiel LADD. 12 children.

12A2     Martha, b ca 1722; mentally retarded, and unmarried- no death date.

12A3     Daniel, Capt., b ca 1724; d 12 Mar 1806 (buried Litchfield, CT); m (1) Abigail ____ , who d 1757, age 31, and (2) Elizabeth BUTLER. 5 children.

By the second wife, Elizabeth (RISLEY):

12A4     Elizabeth, b ca 1729.

12A5     Thankful, b ca 1731
