Frank Langey
Frank Langey was born March 25, 1878 in Berlin,
Germany. He came to Lyon Mountain in 1887 from Germany. He was married
to Lillian LaMare on May 18, 1903. He worked in the mines as a young man
and in the Lyon Mountain Store as a clerk before becoming station agent in
Standish where he worked until a new station was built in Lyon Mountain.
He was appointed station agent here until he was forced to resign due to
ill health in October 1948.
He belonged to St. Bernard's church where he was
a most diligent worker and served as trustee for several years. He also was
a supervisor for the Town of Dannemora for 8 years. He belonged to the
Dannemora Knights of Columbus. He had five children, Connie, Lillian, Cecile,
Frank Jr. and James. Connie is the only surviving member.
William J. Linney
William was born at Old Forge, Pa. in 1912.
The family moved to Lyon Mountain in 1919. He was graduated from Lyon
Mountain High School, Worcester Academy in Mass. and attended the University
of Vermont. He became a chemist, and miner, and then an assistant manager
and blast furnace superintendent. He was appointed district manager of Republic
Steel
at Lyon Mountain in 1945 and in October 1950 was appointed district manager
of Port Henry and Chateaugay divisions, a position he held until his death
in 1956.
He was married to the former Rita LaFountain and
had one daughter and five sons. William's hobbies were hunting, fishing golf
and bobsledding. With his father, Joseph, and brother, Bob, in the 1930's,
he developed the fastest bobsled ever made
in the U.S. He piloted the Republic Mines four-man team on a record run
down the old course on Mt. Van Hoevenberg in 1946.
He piloted the Republic team to a National A.A.U.
Junior Championship in 1940 and won the Adirondack Association A.A.U. Sr.
Championship in 1940. In 1940, 41, 46, he piloted the team into North American
Club Championship. They won this national A.A.U. Championship in 1948. He
was a follower in the footsteps of his dad as far as interest, concern and
progress in the Lyon Mountain community was concerned. William Joseph Linney
died on September 23, 1956 at Port Henry, N.Y. at the age of 44.
